The Milton is an Irish accented restaurant that opened in October 2014. It’s a gastro pub style restaurant that came to fruition by Tomas Maher, of VIP Room, and Chef David Diaz, formerly of Brasserie Beaumarchais. This restaurant is not pretentious and it accommodates a range of people, from the dating couples to young families.

We went out to dinner that evening since we’ve been museum hopping on Museum Mile. We started off strong with fantastic cocktails ($11 each) of The Milton Sour, a riff of one of my favorite drinks, the Pisco Sour but gin based, and Taking the Head, a whisky based drink with pineapple and other fruit juices.

Steak tartare with egg mousse

Our appetizers of truffle chicken nuggets ($10) and steak tartare with egg mousse ($12) were solidly good. The crisp and moist chicken nuggets had pleasant black truffle flavors that doesn’t overwhelm the chicken meat. The steak tartare topped with egg mousse served with two slices of charred country bread was delicious. Silky, little touches of chives, and the egg mousse added an additional dimension of richness. We only wished we had a few more slices of the thickly cut toast to finish off our jar of tartare.

Coconut curry pot pie

The main course of coconut chicken curry pot pie ($19) is loaded with a lot of chicken, carrots, peas and potatoes in a not too thick sweet curry topped with a puff pastry crust. We loved the flavors and it’s a great dish for a cold winter night.

Pan seared salmon with sunchokes, Brussels sprouts and bacon

The pan seared salmon with sunchokes ($24) was a very good dish of moist, seared salmon plated on a bed of roasted brussels sprouts, a generous amount of chopped, sliced bacon, and sunchokes. The lemon hollandaise made the dish heartier than expected but still delicious.

Knickerbocker Glory

If you still manage to have room for dessert, order the Knickerbocker Glory($8). It’s a tall sundae made of vanilla ice cream, orange marmalade, caramel, whipped cream and a maraschino cherry on top. It’s a sweet treat to end the meal.

The Milton is a very good restaurant for the neighborhood. Very good, hearty fare. Service was friendly and prompt and it doesn’t feel fussy.
